Dock Project Finalized
March 1, 2019
The board of directors today finalized the replacement of all Riverbend docks, including the docks on the East Lagoon and the two river docks. There will be no change to the configuration of our dock area, with the exception of the Fishing Pier, which will be raised level with the ground. The project will be done by Greg Orick and will commence sometime within the next 2-3 months. The new pilings will be wrapped from the mud line all the way to within 8" of the decking, to help prevent infestation of bore worms which use the ebb and flow of the tides to float to the pilings. The decking material chosen was TanDeck, composed of pure PVC, which is impervious to water and only requires a powerwash at low setting when visibly soiled, avoiding the need for periodic painting as our current dock boards required. The TanDeck product comes with a 50-year warranty. The color will be Birch, a light sand color.

Riverbend Karaoke Night at NY Pizza
February 27, 2018
Nineteen members of Riverbend met at the nearby NY Pizza and enjoyed an evening of karaoke. Singers included Bill, Susan, and John T. The evening started out with some delicious pizza, other Italian favorites and good conversation. Soon after that, the DJ arrived and set up the karaoke machinery. Those who wanted to sing signed up on the waiting list and the entertainment began. John sang several songs, including a fun rendition of "Mustang Sally" and got the whole place rockin' and clappin'. Bill and Susan each performed a solo and then did a nice duet of "Still The One." Following are some still shots and a short video. (Video requires Quicktime to view)

Odd Creature Spotted Near Walkerbilt Road
November 21, 2015
A strange creature about 4 1/2 inches in length was recently seen taking an evening stroll near Walkerbilt Road. Research revealed that this was a "walking stick", found on every continent of the world. Walking stick females do not need a male to reproduce, but can do that by themselves! In fact, the female in the picture below can be seen carrying her offspring on her back. Walking sticks make good pets, as they do not bite or sting. Their resemblance to a stick is perfect camouflage, which protects them from predators.

Members Rock to Live Band at Dock Party 2015
April 5, 2015
Most of Riverbend turned out to the 2015 Dock Party hosted by Jerry and Donna, held on Easter Day, 2015. This year, one of our members (Lennart) provided a live band for the partygoers entertainment. People brought finger food and drinks and thoroughly enjoyed the last park party of the year before folks start heading back up North. A big thank you to Jerry and Donna!

First Annual Chili Cook-off Big Success
March 2015
Riverbend's first annual 2015 Chili Cook-off, held on March 1st, turned out to be a big success. Everyone enjoyed the varied tastes of 5 different chilis, in addition to chili dogs, many other side dishes, and some yummy desserts. There was little food left! After dinner, residents enjoyed a few entertaining games and a Riverbend trivia quiz. One of the prizes was a Chili Cookbook donated by George. As a finale, the Chili Cook-off winner (Mike Small) was announced. A recognition letter to all who helped out with the event has been submitted by Bill Miller.

Eagles spotted guarding nest
January 2, 2015
Our nesting eagles have started 2015 by guarding the nest, as reported by our Audubon volunteers. They are taking turns sitting on "egg/eggs." We don't know as yet if there will be one or two eaglets this year.

A Riverbend Fish Tale
November 2014
A big Red was caught last month by one of our members, Jonathan Burch. Live shrimp was just too tempting for this hefty twenty-seven incher, caught about 500 yards off our own dock! He caught another one the following day, which was even bigger…about 5 inches longer, and voiced his regret over not having a picture of that one.

more Floridian wildlife spotted in West lagoon
Another sea slug was seen flapping away in the West Lagoon last Thursday afternoon, April 10th. This time, we could see the two small "rabbit ears" that cause some to call it a "sea hare." At the same time, a banded sea snake was taking a meandering swim nearby! Both were captured in photos as shown below. Apparently the snake is harmless.
residents rock during dock party
Invitees were rocking to the sounds of a live guitarist and enjoying delicious party food at a recent dock party hosted by Jerry and Donna. See their antics (including line dancing!) in photos of the party.
ANNUAL SHUFFLEBOARD TOURNAMENT ENJOYED BY All
On Thursday, March 20th, Riverbend held its annual shuffleboard tournament. Our formidable teams squared off for the preliminaries, and after a grueling contest, the winning teams continued with the final playoffs. Winners were Marie and Frank! The following day, residents enjoyed a social gathering and grill-out with brats, hamburgers, hot dogs and corn-on-the-cob. Click here to view the photo gallery
sea monster sighted in WEST lagoon
A mysterious sea monster was sighted in the West Lagoon by several residents at dusk on Wednesday, March 5. The oddly-shaped organism was found undulating forward and backward about 2 inches below the surface.
With research, it was learned that this 18" creature was actually a sea slug, sometimes referred to as a "sea hare" because of the two small protruding tentacles (unable to be seen in this picture) on its head resembling rabbit ears. Sea slugs used to be plentiful in Florida but are rarely seen now. The mollusk lives in marine environments in tropical climates. They creep along the bottom or cling to seaweed, which they eat in addition to plankton and algae. Although many of these "flapping banana peels" are colorful, the species in Florida are usually brown or yellow brown. The bulbous area that can be seen in the middle of their body contains a very thin shell, which protects their internal organs. They are almost defenseless, and are eaten by crabs, lobsters, fish and even humans. However, if molested, they can squirt red or purple dye from a small gland at the base of their body. This dye clogs up the sensory organs of crabs and lobsters and aids in their escape.
Following are other pictures of sea slugs taken from the internet:
2014 valentine's day potluck fun for attendees
Over 30 happy guests attended the Valentine's Day Potluck on Thursday the 13th. There were a multitude of dishes ranging from salads of all kinds to gluten-free spaghetti, in addition to the delicious park-sponsored lasagna. Glen guessed the correct number of candy hearts in the jar (500), Frank got the lucky Valentine's Day card, and who sat in the lucky seat, but Frank again! The sing-a-long went well, but someone did remark that we wouldn't make "American Idol." A big THANK YOU to all those who helped out with the decorations, preparation, games, and clean-up.
